The boy resembles an imperial adult with his eye fixed on a dish of gems with childish covetousness

It was during Badshah Akbar’s long reign from 1556 to 1605 that the Mughal empire took the shape that it would retain until the end of 17th century

The painting was made when Abu’l Hasan was still living in Mandu (before he was invited by Jehangir to the royal court) and uses gouache heightened with gold leaf on a fine woven cotton canvas

The present work is located at the British Museum
