It is signed to the front and the rear shows the title and again signed by the artist. This notation verso suggests the painting was destined for an exhibition. It is a very beautiful example. 'Leading' is a commonly used term even today in the Northumbrian agricultural scene, 'Leading bales' being the most common. It means simply 'transporting', taking', 'moving'. His horse and
