Forced Entries, for all the authors confessed manipulation of the material, can be pressed into service as a biographical source of information about Larry Rivers (in whose studio Carroll once worked), Andy Warhol (Carroll skimmed money as the manager ticket-boy for the porno theatre that operated for a while on East Fourth Street under the artists name), and Robert Mapplethorpe and Patti Smith, who appear as Roger and Jenny Ann. (Smith, Carrolls girlfriend for a time, has provided a short preface to The Petting Zoo, in which she recalls a man without guile, disdainful of his beauty, red-gold hair, lanky body, abstract, bareheaded, empty-handed.) A familiar part of the scene at Maxs Kansas City, on Park Avenue South, Carroll re-creates the clubs atmosphere in Forced Entries and memorably describes being serviced outside its premises by the Warhol superstar Jackie Curtis: My trousers were pulled down to my knees, and her hands ran up and down my thighs like disoriented mice.
