A variation comes up in Frederick Douglass' autobiography, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave , where he relates that if a slave in the Antebellum South requested extra food rations from their owner then it was entirely possible, even expected, that they would then be forced to overeat such that they couldn't finish the generous amount of food they were given, at which point the slave-holder would admonish them for being not being satisfied with any amount of food and would whip them for it.
