Some had been accused of taking the easy way out. A particularly important finding, she added, was that many participants felt society viewed GLP-1 use differently depending on the reason: diabetes treatment was seen as legitimate, while obesity treatment was often framed as cheating. Biologically this doesnt make much sense, de Vere Hunt said, as obesity is also a chronic disease involving dysregulated hormonal and metabolic pathways with serious long-term health implications. Yet eligibility criteria, she said, can reinforce the misconception that people do not need medical support to treat obesity alone
